RARE SPORTS AUTOGRAPH
DISPLAY PIECE OF BABE DIDRIKSON ZAHARIAS
THE GREATEST WOMAN ATHLETE OF ALL
TIME
ZAHARIAS, MILDRED DIDRIKSON, known as "Babe" Didrikson (1914-1956). She was, hands down, the greatest woman athlete in history. She was slender (5'6" tall and weighed 135 lbs.), yet muscular, long-legged and raw boned. She was totally uninhibited and unspoiled and played sports with reckless abandon. She tried almost every sport and excelled at everything she tried. She led the Dallas Cyclones to three AAU National Championships in Women's basketball and scored 106 points in one game. She pitched for a touring baseball team and once struck out Joe DiMaggio. She even made a cross-country billiards tour. Babe also excelled in handball, swimming, diving, lacrosse, football and boxing. She did it all! However her best events were track, field and golf. Grandland Rice called her "truly the athlete phenomenon of our time - man or woman!" In 1930 and 31 she won AAU National track and field titles in the long-jump, hurdles, javelin throw and baseball throw. She entered the 1932 championships as a one woman team representing the insurance company where she worked. She entered 8 of the 10 events and won 5 and finished second and fourth in two more. She won the team title by 30 points. The second place team had 22 athletes and 22 points. In the 1932 Olympics, where she was limited to 3 events, she won the javelin throw with a world record and the hurdles with an Olympic record. She tied for first in the high jump. (Her best jump was ruled illegal because she dove over the bar although nothing in the rules prohibited it.) She played her first round of golf without a lesson and shot 95 for 18 holes. She won 17 amateur tournaments in a row. In all, she won 55 golf tournaments, amateur and pro, in 15 years. She won the Women's U.S. Open three times and was chosen Woman Athlete of the Year five times by the Associated Press. She once said "I never wanted to be as good as somebody else. I wanted to be better", and she was. In 1938 she married wrestler George Zaharias. In 1953 she underwent surgery for rectal cancer. In 1954, still not at full strength, she won the Women's U.S. Open by 12 strokes. In 1956 she died of cancer at age 42. In person signature ("Babe Zaharias") on a slip of paper 4" x 2.5", matted in ivory acid free mats with a 4.5" x 6.5" oval sepia portrait of her in field shorts throwing a javelin with a brass plaque engraved "Babe Didrikson Zaharias/ The Most/ Outstanding Woman Athlete/ Of All Time/ (1914-1956)". A striking display piece. Overall size 11.5" wide x 18.5" tall. Due to her early death, her material is rare in any form, this being only the second piece to cross our desk in 25 years. A gem. ..[12018]..$1295.00
BABE DIDRIKSON’S RARE BOOK: “CHAMPIONSHIP
GOLF”.
ZAHARIAS, MILDRED DIDRIKSON, known as "Babe" Didrikson (1914-1956). (See above biographical information). Her rare book: “Championship Golf”, 8vo, 125 pp., A.S. Barnes & Co., Pubs., 1st ed., 1948, d.j. (chipped) inscribed and signed in pencil “Best Wishes to Florence/ “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias” on first free blank end paper with a huge, bold 5.5” signature. The Babe played golf for the first time in 1932 when she was a member of the U.S. Track & Field Team in the Olympic Games as Los Angeles. A group of sports writers including Grandland Rice, Westbrook Pegler, Paul Gallico, and Braven Dyer suggested that she try a round and arranged a game for her at Brentwood. She used an overweight set of clubs belonging to Olin Dutra, the then PGA Champion. She later stated “ I gripped the club about the same way a baseball player takes hold of a bat until Granny Rice showed me the golf grip. Then I hit a good, whistling tee shot down the middle to the amazement of my personal gallery -- and that was it. I was stung by the Golf bug... The Babe was the first person to hold Championship Cups for both the U.S. and Great Britain. The book is profusely illustrated. She models grips, stances, various irons and shots. In short, a
succinct plainly written illustrated guide to golf by the all time women’s champion whose wins remain unequaled. Due to her early death, the material of Babe Didrikson is rare in all forms -- particularly signed books. A gem. Net to all. [12324]
